WPAC’s Safety Hero Award is for WPAC members and their coworkers who work tirelessly to ensure leading safety practices are implemented and embraced.
We are looking for nominations that recognize your colleagues who are making your facility safer and keeping coworkers safe.
Every two months, we will celebrate the Safety Heros who are making a difference. Winners will be profiled in WPAC’s quarterly newsletter and will receive a $50 Tim Hortons gift card.
Please download the Safety Hero Award posters (in English and French) here, post them in your plant lunchroom, and distribute them through your own network.
Please complete the form below to nominate colleagues or send an email to Gord Murray: gord@pellet.org.
WPAC’s Safety Hero
Brian Penney, Safety Manager at Drax’s Entwistle continuously meets monthly safety objectives and supports the facility’s 55 employees to ensure objectives are met.
An example of his dedication was putting in extra time and energy during an 11-day shutdown to see to it that everyone went home safely at the end of every day.
Corinne Nendick, Plant Leadhand at Drax’s Princeton facility, is an active member of Drax’s Joint Safety team. She is a leader in developing and working through Task Risk Assessments. She is also a leader regarding Hazard IDs and corrective actions and is proudly accident/incident free.
Always striving for continuous improvement, Corinne has taken the WorkSafeBC and Drax-specific courses to improve her understanding of safety and enhance her knowledge of company policies.
Donald White is a plant operator at Shaw Renewables in Hardwood Lands, NS, whose upstanding work ethic and commitment to the safety of his co-workers have consistently led to improvements in the plant’s safety management system.
As industry leaders, converting local biomass waste into high-quality biofuel products, the company’s safety culture is the top priority. Donald has been instrumental in training new assistant operators to safely perform their job functions.
Buddy (William) Berg, plant operator with Premium Pellets, walks the talk and his can-do attitude led to a leading role in WPAC’s safety video, The Power of Pellets: Innovating Our Way to a Safer Better Product, while he was working as the plant’s interim production supervisor. Buddy also served as a key member of the bow tie analysis workshop team for WPAC’s critical control management project. His extensive expertise and valuable insights helped develop a clear picture of potential risks and the safeguards in place to prevent an unwanted event or incident.
Cody Braun, plant operator with Premium Pellets, played a key role in providing input into WPAC’s and BC Forest Safety Council’s e-learning platform. In order to have a smooth rollout of the program, operators were needed to review the modules and identify any gaps in content and subject matter that needed clarification. Along with operators from facilities across Canada, Cody completed the review of four important plant operator modules and recommended several key improvements.
