Today, wood pellets are gaining international recognition as a gateway to producing different types of high-value fuels and biomaterials. Through our research and collaboration with partners, we are trailblazing on the product development, safety, and supply fronts.
- WPAC has partnered with the University of British Columbia on a four-year collaborative project to undertake comprehensive research related to wood pellet production, safety, logistics, and commercialization of wood pellets. With funding from the Government of Canada, this research program brings together experts in the field of sustainable biomass, engineering, and energy markets.

Our four research tasks are related to the use of low-quality agricultural biomass, cost-efficient supply chains, best practices on safe handling and storage of pellets, and the development of quality certification for pellets.

One excellent example of this type of partnership is Drax—a global green-energy producer headquartered in the UK with operations in Europe and North America. Drax is also a major customer of Canadian wood pellet producers.

WPAC’s Safety Committee decided to produce an educational video to help operators minimize the risks associated with combustible gas. Several partners quickly stepped up with technical and financial support. These include the University of British Columbia Biomass and Bioenergy Research Group, BC Forest Safety Council, BiomassCanada Cluster, and Agriculture and Agri-food Canada. This group has now released the video Best Practices in Managing Combustible Gas.
Fahimeh Yazdan Panah is globally recognized for her leadership and research in support of the safe use, storage, and transportation of wood pellets, contributing to greenhouse gas solutions that have the power to transform our world.
